Ann Arbor is a really cool town, somewhat reminiscent of Berkeley, CA. The campus is huge! There is an art fair on campus this week, supposedly the biggest in the nation, and in 4 hours there we didn't see it all. We ate at a great vegetarian restaurant, had fun watching street entertainers, etc.

Northville, where Marianne lives, is a nice suburb of Detroit. The downtown is totally quaint - it could be the downtown in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life."

This blog site won't let us publish anymore photos until August - there's a 10 mb limit per month, and you can't even pay for more if you want to.... So when we get to Chicago in a couple days, we may start a new blog, maybe Howardstrip, so we can get more pix posted. Stay tuned!

By the way, the girls and I have passed through towns with some interesting names, like Ogallalla (NE), and Ypsilanti and Paw Paw (MI).

Now in Marianne's house, I was told some funny stories about them in college (example: They would pretend to be blind on elevators. My mom was the blind one and Maryann was her "guide"). I hope everything's great in Oregon!

Apparently throngs of people came from miles around to listen to the debate, which lasted 8 hours!

This afternoon, my friend took us out to a local lake where she taught Marina and Hayley to sail on her sailboat. They all ended up in the water at some point, but it helped keep us all cool - it is hot and muggy today. Tomorrow we'll get a student-led tour of Knox College, and then some friends of Sue's will take the girls fishing tomorrow night.

Wednesday, we're headed to Northville, MI, not too far from Ann Arbor, home of University of Michigan. We still cannot believe how much corn we've seen growing for miles along the sides of the roads as we'ver travelled east!

Catherine, "yes" to your visit in August - more later.

I promise this blog will be fun and highly stimulating. Today, we drove through Iowa. It was very beautiful, with rolling hills and trees, unlike Nebraska's monotonous corn feilds (there have to be enough corn fields in Nebraska to feed the entire country!). First, we stopped at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa and I enjoyed the small university very much. It was overall a stimulating experience (stimulating is my word of the day f.y.i). Then, I got to drive to Amana (a preserved historical German town) and no, I didn't spit as much as possible as I talked out of consideration for the THIRD PLACE Germans in the World Cup (at least not around my mom). Anyway, I got some cold, yes cold, hot chocolate there and it was a very stimulating experience for my taste buds (yes, stimulating- don't dis my word choice). Then, we drove off to Iowa City and I saw the University of Iowa, which was, you guessed it, stimulating. It was very pretty and really huge. It was the biggest campus I've visited yet. Finally, we went across a very stimulating freeway to the stimulating town of Davenport, which is right next to the most stimulating river in the US- the Mississippi (I just love writing mississippi- it's so stimulating). Tomorrow, we're going to go on a boat on the Mississippi, which promises to be a very stimulating adventure. I'll keep you posted and I'll try to write more often, because some people's blogs just aren't as stimulating as others.

This is Friday night, and we are in a hotel just over the Iowa border near Omaha, NE. Our window looks out over the Missouri River, just about 50 feet away. I was looking out imagining Lewis & Clark floating along the river a couple hundred years ago. Pretty cool.

We promise to post a photo of Carhenge. It is pretty wild. This guy arranged all of these old cars on end in the exact locations and dimensions of Stonehenge, and then he painted them all grey. It's out in the middle of the corn fields outside the tiny town of Alliance, NE, in the NW corner of the state.

Yesterday and today we visited my farmer relatives. We drove out to a couple of the farms which are really rural. To reach them, you have to drive over 10 miles on dirt roads, which go only by a number, like "38." Not 38th Street or Place or Drive. Just a number. Apparently the farmers here prefer certain brands and colors of tractors. My great uncle Malvin, who's lived on the same farm for over 60 years, likes red tractors. But his sons and grandkids like green John Deeres. Also, my cousin's husband ordered a drink I'd never heard of at Ole's last night: "I'll have a red beer." When I inquired, he said it's a popular drink that's half tomato juice and half beer. I declined to try it.......

We stopped and walked around the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln. 'Weren't really very impressed. Not surprisingly, it has a huge football stadium. Omaha seems to be a prettier, livier town than Lincoln, although Lincoln has an impressive revitalized downtown area that looked pretty "happening."

Tomorrow we'll head towards Illinois, passing through Des Moines on I-80. If it's not too hot to be outside, we'll tour the Amana Colonies. These were communal villages settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. They are preserved and are quaint, sort of along the lines of Amish communities. Anyway, the villages eventually went corporate, and the Amana Appliance Company was the result. We're also anxious to see the Mississippi River. (Remember the little chant you said when you were little to remember how to spell that?) Then it's on to Galesburg, IL to visit my college friend who is the head of the Political Science Dept. at Knox College.

It was very hot today, and we got lost both on the road and in our hotel. We accidently recieved the wrong key and went into a room with some random smoking guy in there. It was quite awkward. Anyway, yesterday's first stop was Carhenge. If you're wondering what Carhenge is, it is an exact replica of Stonehenge in England, except it's a bunch of old cars spraypainted gray! In Nebraska I also met my relatives! I met my great great uncle Malvin, who is a farmer, my first cousin twice removed Margie, my third cousins Noah and Marissa. Malvin is 90, Margie is 59, Noah is 4, and Marissa is almost 2. I learned from Noah that red tractors are really not cool, but GREEN tractors are totally cool. In fact, he got a shirt with red tractors on it, and refused to wear the shirt because the tractors weren't green! Then we all went to a restauraunt called Ole's in Paxton, Nebraska. I ordered ribs, and they gave me this HUGE plate, and the ribs went off the plate about 3 inches on each side! I only ate about a quarter of it there was so much. Today we drove for about 5 hours, but first stopped and found my great grandma's grave. Now were are in Council Bluffs, Iowa, which is a town just into Iowa near Omaha, Nebraska. Well then, I'll see y'all later!

The freeway was not pink east of Sheridan for a while, but then between Buffalo and Gillette it turned pink once again. The soil/rock in northeastern Wyoming is very red, so maybe local gravel just turns out pinkish.

We drove through Bear Country USA yesterday afternoon. It really was awesome. We'll post pictures if we can. You drive through various "animal areas" going very slowly - 10 mph max. In the elk/reindeer area, this reindeer with enormous antlers came right up to the car and started rubbing them against the side of the car! The most impressive area was the bear area. There were a couple dozen black and grizzly bears! In this area, they do not allow you to open your car window to snap photos - duh! Anyway, these bears have been raised on site (it's the largest private collection of black bears in the world), so they are relatively tame (I wouldn't try to pet one, though...)One black bear butted up against our rear bumper and stratched his rump on it! The animals roam freely in natural environments - it was way better than a zoo. Then they had an area of baby animals, where we saw the cutest little cougar cub!

Last night we saw the lighting of Mt. Rushmore - very impressive. We toured the Borglum (sculptor of the monument) museum, hiked up a trail to get closer to the stone heads, etc.

Today we had a real midwestern thunderstorm. It went from clear skies and very warm outside to torrential rain, major lightning and thunder, etc. Heavier rain even than in Oregon. (People here have been asking us how to pronounce Oregon - they ask if it's Or-ee-gone).

This blog site seems not to want us to post many more pictures, and I'm trying to find a way around it. If we can't do it on the blog, I'll email them if you wish.

We had some very sad news today. Gordon's sister, Linda, died this morning in Durango from complications related to the chemotherapy she was receiving to treat her lymphoma cancer. She developed pneumonia and couldn't overcome it due to her low white cell count and overall weakness. She was only 44 and leaves behind her husband and 2 young daughters, ages 6 and 9. We may change out itinerary to go to Durango to be with Linda's family and Gordon's parents.

I think that the best animal was this cute baby cougar playing in the grass. And probably the most memorable part was when a raindeer was literally touching the car. Its antlers were HUGE! Then we checked into our little cabin near Mt Rushmore and went to see Mt Rushmore. They lit the mountain up and 9:00 and it was amazing! So now we are back in the cabin, about to get ready for bed. Montana and Wyoming tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-07-10:/blog/?domain=howardtrip&thisblog_entryid=11&entryid=16606 2006-07-10T07:00:48Z 2006-07-10T07:00:48Z Montana is a huge state to drive across - the western part and the Rocky Mtns are really scenic. Montana is a huge state to drive across - the western part and the Rocky Mtns are really scenic. Marina drove us over the continental divide! Missoula and Bozeman are pretty campuses in nice college towns - both cities have lots of restored older homes in neighborhoods with a lot of character. Even Butte, surprisingly, was interesting. It has a lot of historic buildings downtown. It seems like they could be restored and turned into nice hotels, restaurants, etc. Of course, the huge open pit mine in Butte distracted from the ambiance...

Billings is just plain bleak - we arrived late in the evening, spent the night in a hotel there, and took off in the morning. I think they need a zoning ordinance or some type of city planning...at the intersection of I-90 and I-94, there is a huge auto wrecking yard that is highly visible from far away. The cars are piled all the way up this hill and it is appalling!

Marina is right - the moment we crossed the Montana-Wyoming border, the pavement on I-90 turned reddish-pink! Really strange. We stopped at the Little Bighorn Battlefield (Custer's last stand...)National Monument. It was pretty interesting - at least the Indians won one.

We're in Sheridan, WY overnight tonight. It's a nice town with the beautiful Bighorn Mtns. as a backdrop. It has a very "old western town" feel. You can tell the people who live here have an investment in their community - the downtown has been restored to look like it did in the late 1800s. And then there are more contemporary murals, sculptures, and other public art scattered about. However, there is a really high proportion of pickup trucks with rifle racks here...a little scary.

I had fun tonight re-connecting with a good friend from both high school and college (Univ. of Arizona). And the girls enjoyed getting to know his daughters. He's a doctor with the VA Hosptial here in town. We both told stories about each other's past lives which both delighted and embarassed our respective daughters! And I felt good because I neither have gray hair nor wear bifocals, but he does! Ha, ha!

Tomorrow we'll head to Mt. Rushmore, passing through the towns of Buffalo (!), Gillette, and Rapid City on our way. After that, stay tuned for the visit to Carhenge and the Christensen family wheat farm and pig ranch of western Nebraska. The cord for uploading pix from the digital camera to the laptop seems to have "disappeared" so it may be a while before any more pictures get posted.

While Billings, Montana was perhaps the ugliest town we've visited so far, Sheridan, Wyoming is, in my opinion, the nicest town we've stayed in. We had only about a two-hour car ride from Billings to Sheridan, so I didn't drive at all today. We slept in until about 9:30 then lazed around town until about 11:30 am. Finally, we were on the road and cruising at 75mph on the freeway! However, for some unexplained reason, the second we crossed the border into Wyoming the freeway turned pink. I'm not even joking! Maybe their state is just weird; I mean, it is Wyoming. Who would be wierd enough to name their state Wyoming? But, the pink freeway aside, Wyoming turned out to be a pretty state. Once we arrived in Sheridan, my mom called her old friend from high school Scott Tenney and we went over to his place for dinner. On the way, we stopped at what we thought was an old historic inn where Buffalo Bill Cody used to go, but apparently we had the wrong building as we walked into a smokey bar with a couple making out on the pool table!!! Finally we found the hotel and shortly afterword drove to mom's friend's house. It was very nice. As soon as Scott saw me, he told me I looked like my mom did when she was my age. I sat in the hotel and cried for hours (just kidding)! Scott turned out to be very funny and sarcastic and we learned some interesting stories about my mom (like the time they had to boil and dissect a cat for extra credit in a biology class). Scott's wife was extremely nice and his two daughters were there as well. Leah is going into her senior year in high school and Hannah is going into medical school next year. They were both really nice and I was so glad they weren't stupid girly-girls or something. After a evening full of laughs, we parted ways and when I got back to the hotel, Hayley and I worked out in their exercise room for awhile (I want to improve my chances for starting next year in waterpolo) and now I am winding down and getting ready for bed. Hope you all have had nice weather in Oregon (the weather on our trip so far has been pretty good, if a little hot)!

Over and out

P.S: AHHHHHHH- Italy won, but they wouldn't have if it hadn't been for stupid Zidane's head-butt!!!

We took a walk around the campus and ate lunch right outside the music hall where someone was attempting to sing opera (I am sooooo much better than that amateur). The campus really impressed me. Then, we got out and stretched at Butte, Montana and we ate an early dinner at Matt's Drive In. It was great food and was very old fashioned. They even had an old-fashioned coke machine!!! Then, we stopped at Bozeman, Montana and I toured Montana State University which was also serene and beautiful. I was awed at both Montana universities and enjoyed their campuses much more than I enjoyed the campus of Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington. Finally, just before our bladders were about to burst, we reached Billings and after some looking and a lot of luck (A Lutheran Convention was in town so there were basically no hotel rooms avaliable in the entire city), we found our hotel and that is where I'm writing this rather dull blog from. Oh, and did I mention that it's an hour later here so while we think its about 10:15 right now, it's actually 11:15 here and while I'm writing this incredibly long run-on sentence I might as well add that I'm so excited that Germany won third place in the world cup and REALLY WANT FRANCE TO BEAT ITALY in the title game!

See ya soon.....err.... I mean see ya in a long, long, long time!

THE WONDERFUL, AMAZING, BLOND BOMBSHELL,
(Do I even have to put a name here?)

Silverwood was AWESOME!!! tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-07-07:/blog/?domain=howardtrip&thisblog_entryid=8&entryid=16410 2006-07-08T05:30:31Z 2006-07-08T05:30:31Z Hello, everyone. We are in a hotel right now and just got back from Silverwood theme park. There was also a waterpark, which was ok, but the best part was the theme park. Anyone who knows me knows that I really hate roller coasters, but I went on a double corkscrew roller coaster! I refused to go on it until Casey bribed me with $3, but then when I rode I loved it! Also, there was an awesome river rapids ride, and a log flume. My mom got the most wet of anyone on the rapids. She was soaked! There were 2 HUGE roller coasters that Marina and Casey went on, but I didn't quite have the courage for those. At least I went on the corkscrew! Also, the wave pool was pretty cool, and the roundup ride was a billion times bigger and faster than the one at Oaks Park in Oregon. The park was so cool! Now I'm in the hotel suite we got, and I'm writing this blog. We're about to start the SNL best of Will Ferrell. I hope things are great in Oregon!
-Hayley GO DUCKS!

Chewelah, Washington tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-07-06:/blog/?domain=howardtrip&thisblog_entryid=3&entryid=16302 2006-07-06T21:14:36Z 2006-07-06T21:14:36Z We made it to Chewelah, a little north of Spokane, by about 7 pm last night. It is a beautiful little valley not too far south of the Canadian border. We're visiting my cousin and her family. Tomorrow we will go with them to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to the Silverwood Theme Park. It is a huge place with rides, a waterslide park, etc. We'll post some photos next time. Emily ... We made it to Chewelah, a little north of Spokane, by about 7 pm last night.
